40mm ACW Union Infantry

This is my first commission in a while, and it's a new scale for me: 40mm Civil War from Sash and Saber!

The figures arrived in Wednesday's mail, and, anxious to see what they were like, I had them prepped and ready for paint that evening.

I gave them a couple of coats of flat black primer. Although the weather is cold and wet here in Idaho, the paint dried well.

Last night I was able to finish their hair, initial coat on the face, and any exposed socks.  I also started with the base coat of Prussian blue.

I hope to finish the base coat today!

  1. I really like these figures and they paint up well. Do you have any idea what your client plans to do with the finished figures?

    1. No idea! He is going with multi-figure basing, so probably not Sharp Practice.

  2. Very nice work in the "new" scale, Scott. Fine figures though these 40's are, I sometimes wonder why not just to 54mm - a lot of choices - some in inexpensive plastic too.

    1. Well, the footprint in 40mm looks to be much less that 54mm. I know I always prefer metal figures myself!

  3. The Sash and Saber 40 mm line is quite well done, and surprisingly economical as well. Barry was gung ho for an AWI project in 40 mm a number of years back, and I agreed to raise troops as well, but he abandoned the idea before I acquired any myself!

    1. I'm enjoying painting these. Chris always sculpts great figures.

  4. I have several of these sitting on a shelf above my painting table - unfinished. They're a very nice range of minis. Have fun painting them, even if you're not keeping them.

    1. Who knows; maybe these will inspire me to collect 40mm as well. I already game ACW in 28mm, 15mm, 10mm, and 6mm. What's one more scale? :-)
