Possible New Project

Glenn is thinking of adding a new Napoleonic collection: true 25mm figures painted in "toy soldier" style and finished with a gloss clear coat. I can definitely see the appeal. I whipped up these 25mm Minifigs Prussians in a day, and I do think a table full of these would look splendid.

  1. I have already started acquiring a good number of Del Prado (Relive Waterloo) Cavalry, which are perfect for this project. Minifigs (where the hats are not too crazy big) will fill the holes.
I am also eyeing Prince August and Tradition 25mm for most of the Infantry stands, with some Minifigs where there are holes.
Tradition seems to have some great artillery crew that will fit the bill. Still trying to select the best guns in this scale.

I received my first batch of Del Prado Cavalry over the weekend and dove into re-touching them as some of the colors have faded (reds and blues and black) and whites have yellowed.

After a bit of work, they really shine!
With a coat of gloss, they will really work well.

...Now I just need to sell off my amazing collection of 18mm Scott MacPhee AB's...who wants to buy to greatest Napoleonic Miniatures collection on the planet?

    1. You're selling off the Napoleonics? I hear butterfly wings flapping.

  2. This is a classic look. Perfect for the toy soldier treatment. The simple, bright green basing makes the presentation complete.

    1. That's what I was thinking with the green basing. Do you have any old school historical minis? Spencer Smith? Scruby? I'm not sure who all made Napoleonics.

    2. Agree totally on the green. I've already painted several bases in that shade here.
I researched it pretty extensively and it appears that there are several manufacturers that are in the smaller end of the scale, more like 22 - 23mm, and some that are closer to actual 25mm (foot to eye).

    3. Scott, I have never seen nor painting a Spencer Smith. I have painted a number of Scrubys. The 25mm Scrubys have a certain charm and lack of detail.

  3. Splendid Scott...
I am a big fan of Minifigs... I think that they were made to be shiny.

    All the best. Aly

    1. Aly, after seeing your magnificent Napoleonic glossy toy soldier project, all I can say is 'Wow!'
That is EXACTLY what I hope to accomplish with one that Scott and I could create. The minis that you have chosen, the painting style, and even the basing are perfect.
      Truly magnificent!

  4. I like them! of course, Minifigs still soldier on in many of my armies, and I once had well over 1,000 block painted Scruby French Napoleonics alone!

    1. I don't 'want to' per se.
I have to if I want to fund the next project.
The AB collection is mind-numbingly expensive, and I could never justify spending more without selling it.
      So, sadly, I must.

  6. I have begun collecting Del Prado cavalry miniatures and restoring them. The figures are outstanding 25mm miniatures, and paint jobs are nice, but not perfect. Age has also not been kind to them, with many of the figures needing parts glued back on, colors faded, or paint chipping.

I have started posting again on my blog with the results of my restoration efforts.
