Rebasing 28mm Gauls

I have sizable ancients armies in 28mm, with almost everything based for Warhammer Ancient Battles.  I used to run a wargaming club at my school, but eleven years have passed since then, and these figures have never hit the table during all that time.

Some of these armies are pretty large, with a few hundred figures.  I have Carthaginians, mid-republican Romans, late republican Romans, early imperial Romans, Macedonians, and Gauls.  Everything is based singly, as WAB required, and that really doesn't work for the big battle games I enjoy.

I was thinking about selling off those armies, but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to keep them.  These were some of the first 28mm I ever painted, and they have some sentimental value to me.  I also thought it might be fun to play a game with them again!

This week I rebased my Gauls.  I used 60mm by 30mm bases for the foot and 60mm square bases for the horse.  I have six chariots, but I did not rebase them yet, as the reins will surely break if I pry them from their current bases.

Warband 4

Gaisatoi (Naked Fanatics)

Slingers

Chariots

The grand total for this army is 194 foot, 27 mounted, and six chariots with 12 crew.  I'm not at all sure what rules I could use them for, but I am glad I went to the trouble to rebase them.  The army looks pretty good!  I have been moving away from 28mm figures for a while, but maybe I will add to this force in the future.

  1. They look great re-based, Scott. Multi-fig basing is my preference now. I hated re-ranking singles (esp. spear/pike units) as it was hard to get them in their trays again - an oft performed task for me playing WAB as I would inevitably be on the losing end of shooting and combat! :)

    1. Yes, I too prefer multi-fig basing for the same reason. My poor troops could never quite rank up.

  2. An old army is new! I much prefer the multi-figure stands over singletons. Great rebasing work and a fabulous army. You could use these to TtS!

    1. Yes, I was thinking they would work for that. I could also use them for Commands and Colors if we had some LARGE hexes. They would have to be able to accommodate 120mm x 120mm, so maybe 6" across?

  3. Magnificent work as always Scott. So much work goes into figures for this hobby, I wouldn't be selling anything unless forced to by financial imperatives. Look forward to viewing the other 28mm figures rebased. Cheers. Ian

    1. Well, I do like the hobby to at least fund itself, so I do end up parting with miniatures from time to time. I think I will start on Caesar's army next week.

    1. Thanks! They were done in three seperate waves, and I can really tell how my painting improved over time.

  5. They look wonderful. To the Strongest would be the obvious choice - if you use 2 bases per unit, those troops would make 4 cavalry units, 10 Warband, 2 Fanatics, 2 slingers, and 3 to 6 chariots; a very respectable force! You might need a few generals if you don't already have them.

    1. TTS was my first thought too, although I would have to make a new mat. My 4" squares will be too small.

  6. The sprigs of green really help the basing work. Nicely done. Good to see the figures massed up.

  7. I'm someone who has lived a life seemingly in the background, I must say this final indignity I have suffered almost too much to endure. You see, I have been sickly and weak since the day I was born and doomed to go through my life weakling. I seemed to have always suffered from one illness or another and could never play with the other children as I so desperately wanted to. Mother always made such a big fuss over me, also, making the situation worse as the other boys teased me mercilessly after they saw it. I was browsing  the internet searching on how I could be transformed into a powerful person when I came across the email of a man named Lord Mark. who was a VAMPIRE so I told him that I has always dreamed of becoming a  VAMPIRES, All i did was just to follow the procedure that i was been told, and i bet you that procedure I took change my entire life to something i ever desire, freedom, sickness free, pains free, fame, influence, connections and even more that i can. Thanks to Lord Mark. Do you want a life full of interesting things? Do you want to have power and influence over others? To be charming and desirable?
