ACW Commission: Guns Finished

I had hoped to done with all my painting by August 2nd, and I just made it! Today I put the finishing touches on these 18 guns.

And with these done, my painting is finished! I still have to base all the figures and terrain the bases, but it's a relief to be able to hang up my brush for a while.

Below are the four types of guns that Glenn provided for the project. On the top left we have a 10-pdr Parrott rifle. On the top right is a Union 12-pdr Napoleon. Under it, on the bottom right, is a Confederate 12-pdr Napoleon. On the bottom left is a 3" ordinance rifle.

I matched the finish of these barrels to reproductions that I've seen at various reenactments. I even got to pull the lanyard of a 6-pdr smoothbore once! I primed the Parrott gun with some automotive primer that is nearly black, but has just a hint of grey. The 3" rifles got a coat of gloss black enamel, as they tended to have a very shiny finish. The bronze Napoleons got a primer coat of reddish brown, followed by a vigorous drybrushing with enamel gold paint.

All these models are by Sash and Saber. I think they're the best looking ACW cannon on the market, so Glenn chose well.

I'll be taking a break for a week, but starting on August 9th I'll be basing all 434 foot and 60 mounted figures.

  3. Aaron, your site looks great! The only tip I would give you is to use a photo editor to brighten up your pictures. I use Picasa, which is free, but any editor should allow you to adjust the brightness levels. I rarely put an original photo on this blog. They always turn out too dark. Most everything you see here has had the fill light and highlights turned way up to compensate for my poor lighting.

  5. Well done Scott. That's a HUGE commission. I'd be burnt out if I finished that many figures in 2 years let alone 2 months!
